How To Slay Waterfiends
When I first had a waterfiend task I blocked them because I thought that they would be too hard, kinda like I did with skeletal wyverns, but after a little research on other sites I found out that they weren’t as bad as they looked.
The waterfiends are level 115 and give 128 slayer experience per kill, they attack with magic and range. I recommend having 80+ in melee stats aswell as hitpoints, and atleast 40+ prayer and 70 range and defence for the karils armour. If you want to do these for training instead of slayer change the slayer helmet to neitznoit. I don’t recommend going to the waterfiends in the chaos tunnels, as it is multi combat, and waterfiends can be a handful with just 1v1.
(NOTE: to do waterfiends using this method you have to do some of the barbarian training from the barbarian on the lake outside the cave). I don’t recommend doing these if you lag alot, as they can kill pretty quickly if your not careful.
The easiest way to get to the waterfiends is to use a games necklace to barbarian outpost then put it in the bank in the deposit box inside the barbarian assault building. Then head south til you get to a pier with a whirlpool at the end of it. Enter the whirlpool, before you go down the stairs on the next level pot up and put your protect from magic prayer on to avoid the mage attacks from the brutal green dragons, and make sure you have a anti dragon breath shield or dragonfire shield on or you won’t make it to the waterfiends (you can drop the anti dragonbreath shield if you are only going to use 2handed weapons as there won’t be anymore brutal green dragons to worry about while in this area).

Above is the equipment I used to kill them, except for the sgs for specials, you can change the slayer ring to another ring if you like, I use this ring now if I have a long slayer task like this one was.
Once your ready to go down, head south past the brutal drags then west when you can til you get to the waterfiends, put on range prayer and your weapon, unless your using a 1 handed weapon of course. Waterfiends are weak against crush attacks so I recommend using a saradomin sword as it is fast and very accurate for the crush style attack. If you can’t afford to buy a saradomin sword, I recommend using a zamorakian spear as it is the second best crush weapon in my opinion besides the godswords, but they’re too slow for the waterfiends except they are good for specials (especially the saradomin godsword as it heals hitpoints and prayer with 1 special).
I usually take 2-3 bunyips (depending on amount assigned) 10 p pots 1 super restore/summoning potion, 1 super set, holy wrench, teletab or another quick teleport out, 100-200 swallow whole scrolls for the bunyips as the watefiends drop alot of raw sharks and lobsters and the rest sharks or tuna potatoes. I use berserker ring now instead of the ring of life, although you could use an explorer ring aswell as it gives a teleport and +1 prayer bonus, I recommend using ring of life the first time you go down there as it might be tricky at first.
Keep the range prayer on all the time until they become unaggressive, which is usually about 8-10 minutes of killing. Then turn on and off after you kill them. There is a log near the waterfiend spot that takes you out of the cave if you happen to forget a teleport. Some people take guthans with them to help, I tested it out and found that you get hit more with guthans on no matter what prayer you have on, if you do use guthans its best to use mage prayer as it doesnt have that great of mage defence but has a good range defence.

The picture above is from a 181 waterfiend task I completed a couple days ago, the godsword is a saradomin godsword which I borrowed from a friend, it works great there, rarely need to eat or use prayer potions. On this occasion I forgot to take the swallow whole scrolls, but it didn’t seem to make much difference, and I only took 5 prayer potions aswell. I accidently took 5 bunyips thats why there is 2 leftover in the inv still. The herb seeds were lantadyme and ranarr.
Some people range these when they get the waterfiends unaggressive, but in my opinion it just doesnt keep up with the rate of crimsons that melee gives. I haven’t tried it though, the waterfiends give heaps of mithril arrows so I guess it’s endless arrows there. Waterfiends also give heaps of crimson charms about 80% of kills have crimsons, and 90% are atleast a charm. They also drop alot of water orbs, water runes, mithril ore, seaweed, snape grass, blood and death runes which makes them very profitable and suitable for summoning and ancient supplies aswell as you can see in the above picture.
I hope this guide comes in handy for people wondering about waterfiends. I will add a map of how to get to the spot in the cave aswell as an inventory picture of what I take there.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask I’m sure I can help you out.
Goodluck with your waterfiend slaying.

Brilliant Guide and helped me no end on my first trip to the waterfiends. I used exactly what you were wearing and enjoyed it. I had Crimson Charms in abundance. TY for the Guide

Your welcome glad I could help.
November 19th, 2008 at 6:18 am
Thanks for the help bro, I went there today because i was bored. I managed to get 50 + kills
, I used the spot you use and i realised it is much better, i couldnt use karils or a saradomin sword, so i used a d scimmy and black d’hide. and a void spinner pouch
November 19th, 2008 at 10:57 am
np mate, you should use a crush weapon though, dragon scimitar wouldn’t work that great I wouldn’t think.
November 20th, 2008 at 12:52 am
your right, i hit alot of 0′s lol and i wasted alot of cash for that trip but it was fun so i dont mind

I had these waterfeinds on my blocked list for slayer, but now have them open after reading this guide. They are much easier once you know what you are doing and their rewards are great. I love the quantity of crimson charms they give.

Hey my stats are 66 attack, 75 strength, 61 defence, 69 hitpoints, 47 range, 66 magic and 17 summoning. I really need about 650 crimson charms for lvl 50 summoning. Would this be a good method for me, if so how many charms would i get per hour. Also wot weapon should i use (i am happy to train attack to lvl 70 if i need to).
February 25th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
I wouldn’t recommend doing waterfiends at those levels, as they would hit alot and you wouldn’t get many kills per load. Try doing some slayer tasks or maybe dust devils if you can for crimsons.
February 25th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
ok wot would be the fastest way for me to get 50 summoning, including collecting charms??
February 25th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
well what summoning level are you at the moment? and slayer seems to give the most charms from my experience, that’s how i got to 89 summoning so far
February 25th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
im only lvl 17 summoning and i really want to get it up as fast as i can.
February 25th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
hmm, perhaps try rock crabs or fire giants for all round charms, not sure what are good for crimsons besides slayer monsters.
February 25th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
just wondering what lvl are dust devils. and thank you so much for all the help.
February 25th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Crowlion made a guide on dust devils here: http://bestrunetips.com/blog/runescape-monsters/slaying-dust-devils
you need 65 slayer for them though, and no problems with the help that’s what we’re here for.
February 25th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
oh lol i only got 22 slayer. is there any other effective way to get crimson charms. i just remembered i already have some charms, so i only need bout 150 crimson charms.
February 25th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
you could try greater demons, or i’ve heard that cockroach soldiers are good for crimsons but i’ve never tried them so wouldn’t be able to help much there. crowlion made a guide on greater demons, i can find it if you like?
February 25th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
yer sure if its not to much trouble. thanks =]

np, good luck with summoning.
March 10th, 2009 at 6:45 am
how many charms do i get per hr?
March 10th, 2009 at 11:27 am
I’m not 100% sure about the charm rate per hr, as I haven’t had a waterfiend task for a while now… but I think it’s roughly 80 crimsons per hr depending on your stats and equipment. Hope that helps, when I get another waterfiend task I’ll test it out and let you know.
March 28th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Is it possible to range them
March 29th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
yes it is possible to range waterfiends, but you have to get them unaggressive first. I haven’t tried to range them yet, but when I try I will update the post to let you know how I went.
April 10th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
I know that this is the most widely used method, and you can do a large task this way but I was thinking that maybe full veracs would be better as you can protect from Mage as you have a much higher prayer bonus defence bonus a decent crush bonus + you get the extra acuracy special of full veracs I will try this methods now unless you could tells that it wouldn’t work cheers.whiteskull20
April 11th, 2009 at 12:08 am
I’ve never tried veracs at waterfiends, it might go good, would you mind letting us know how it goes?
April 11th, 2009 at 1:03 am
Works very well as you can also use super defence for range attacks, it is also deadly acurate and my prayer bonus is aroud 30 please talk to me ingame about it though as I won’t be back on here
April 12th, 2009 at 9:08 am
hmm scrap that its still super accurate but i have maxed melee stats any/way and i was still getting through allot of food i tried karils/spear and it works better sorry for time wasting
April 12th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Thanks for the help.
May 14th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
I just got assigned 199 waterfiends looking forward to doing them tonight
May 14th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Congrats and Good luck mate.
May 18th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Great guide
i have ‘em for a task.. and going to do it thanks to you. ^.^
May 27th, 2009 at 10:58 am
I have 80 Att/def and 80 str.
Will I be able to stayfor a while? I and I’m going to be using SS. Not sure about the other equip. Thanks man I and karils good call :]
May 27th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
You should be able to stay for a while, make sure you have a good crush weapon though, the SS is the best for it, but zamorakian spear is ok if you can’t afford the saradomin sword.
I haven’t found any good one handed crush weapons that are efficient though, will try some next time I get the task and update the post about it.
Good luck with the waterfiends.
May 28th, 2009 at 9:52 am
Thanks man. This guide encouraged me to go I’ll update on how I do and if I find any secrets
July 9th, 2009 at 5:23 am
I have recently been doing waterfiends for the charms. I do as many as I can in 1 bunyip then use a home tablet, top up prayer, mounted glory to edge, bank, then games necklace back. That way, I get about 60 or so kills each trip and the downtime is pretty short (probably under 2 minutes).
I don’t take any prayer potions with me and only pray v range when my food is starting to run low.
I employed a similar strategy for most of my slayer missions on my run to 99. The savings in prayer potions is absolutely huge over the many months it takes to get 99 slayer.

Hello
I just got my first water task and because i fail @ most tasks i wondered, could you use red chins in tunnels because i could take high def armour and pray mage anyway any tips would be good
January 21st, 2010 at 4:02 pm
Using the waterfiends in chaos tunnels would probably be too risky with red chins, but you can try it if you like.
January 22nd, 2010 at 4:34 am
Ahhh aj 692, you brought an idea about the waterfiends in Chaos Tunnel. I found out that when you’re in there, and use the portal all the way like northeast. Stay there for about 10 minutes and the waterfiends become non aggressive. Just stay on the eastern area and not west. If you do, they become aggressive again.
Btw Delarue64, save the pictures as PNG. JPEG is a little ehh.
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:27 am
I tried the red chins and to be honest i wouldnt advise it, for some reason some monsters in the tunnels seem to be overpowered, 1) dags rip through 99 def with high def gear, 2) waters seemed to be alot harder and 3) not sure ill think of one
February 6th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
Hey. Nice guide you got here!
I just needed some advice, I have the fiends as a slayer task but I barely get to fit in more than 25 kills per trip….
120 cb, 99 attack, 85 def & str.
Equip I take: dhide top &bottom, d boots, slayer helm, ss, helm of neit, cb brace and explorer ring 3
invent: bunyip, sup. Str, sup. Def (2 of each), 50 swallow whole & rest of invent filled with swordfish.
Help me out plez
ingame name is: S P R I N E
February 6th, 2010 at 4:29 pm
probably take sharks if you can instead of swordies, and karils instead of dhide, other then that i cant think of much different that would work. hope that helps
February 12th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
hi i was wondering wats the best way to kill them in the choas tunnels as i cant go in the cave and i went there and got owned
February 15th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
You are better off waiting til you can go through the caves without getting owned, as the chaos tunnels are alot harder and even people with maxed melee can have problems in there too.
February 15th, 2010 at 10:08 pm
Killing Waterfiends at Chaos Tunnel is the best way to kill them since you can use familiars who can attack since it’s multi. I should submit a guide on how I do it.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
for some reason some monsters in the tunnel seem to be overpowered,
so it would be intresting to hear more about killing the waters there
July 29th, 2010 at 10:52 am
i am 77 att 82 str and 75 def i bring 5 prayer potions and 18 sharks.i weak black d hide body legs and helm of nez with d boots combat bracelet and ring of wealth.i can only manage 20 kills per trip. any advice? trying to get war tortois :/ 47 summoning atm. plz replyyyyyyy
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:32 am
Sigil, If you can afforf it id say buy karil’s It will help you alot, and as Delarue64 said bunyip is important. I’d personally only go there for a task because the slayer helm will also help alot. also rember a “crush” wep is also much better.
May 31st, 2011 at 6:14 am
